I love to use fresh herbs in my cooking and I hate to pay $3-4 for bunch of parsley from the supermarket which is saggy and has obviously been there for some time.
The longer it is between picking the herb from the garden and you using it significantly impacts on the flavor.
The herbs I currently use come from a couple of places, on the deck outside the kitchen and also down the steps in an area behind my workshop.
I use normal soil to grow the ones on the veranda and sometime I get good results and sometimes not. It is now winter in Sydney Australia, so, pretty unimpressive at the moment. However in summer I do get some very good crops.
However, my most success has been using a Hydroponics system I bought last year. the Basil is superb and the Lemon Grass has taken over everything!
So, what is my Indoor Herb Garden Challenge about you would be asking yourself!
Well, it seems that I have a lazy streak, well hidden, I hope but a lazy streak nonetheless. While I have these great herbs within 20 paces or so, I find it a bit of chore to go outside and pick them while I am preparing food!
The perfect result for me would be to have an Indoor Herb Garden, ideally situated in the kitchen window, so, I just grab whatever fresh herb i need in my cooking there and then.
Well, easy you might say, just go out and buy one of those kits that you see advertised around the place, so, I did think about doing that and read some reviews etc. The one that is marketed mostly in Australia I wont mention brands at this point, it uses a lamp system and looks great on TV, but from reading some reviews, it may be a bit noisy, also, it is quite pricey. There is another one I see advertised in USA ------- which seems to be good, but doesn't sell here as far as I know.
Anyway, I thought, why not try to duplicate my success with the Hydroponics system outside and use it to build my very unique Indoor Herb Garden?
This will be the tale of my journey to make an Indoor Herb Garden.
As an added bonus, it may well help me to understand how the internet works, as I keep a log of my attempt.
This will not only be useful to Australians, but should translate to anywhere people live in houses or apartments.
I am sure there will be lots of people saying I cant do it for a variety of valid scientific reasons, but as they say in Australia " Give It A Go You Mug !!!
So, cheer me along!
